“Choosing the right fence post size is the difference between a fence that lasts five years… and one that lasts fifteen. The post does all the structural work, so you want to size it correctly from the start.”
Best Post Size for Standard UK Fence Panels
For most gardens:
6ft high panels:
→ 4″ x 4″ (100mm x 100mm) posts
→ Set 600mm–750mm into the ground with postmix.5ft panels:
→ 4″ x 4″ posts (still ideal)
→ 550mm–600mm in ground.4ft panels:
→ 3″ x 3″ (75mm x 75mm) can work, but upgrading to 4×4 gives far better wind resistance.
Why 4×4 Posts Are the Best Choice
Stronger against wind
Less movement in wet soil
Last longer with feather-edge or fully-framed panels
Far fewer call-backs or repairs
If you’re installing heavy panels like fully framed featheredge, always choose 4×4 posts.
What About Concrete Posts?
A good option, especially in exposed gardens.
However — properly pressure-treated 4×4 timber posts remain extremely popular due to lower cost, faster installation, and a cleaner look.
Recommended Extras
Postmix for each hole
Wooden or concrete gravel boards to keep panels off the ground
Capping rails for extra panel lifespan
👉 For best results, pair 4×4 posts with our fully framed feather-edge panels — the strongest combination for UK gardens.
